It is almost impossible for any person to remain successful for over two decades. That feat was achieved by the legendary Shankar Jaikishan who enjoyed unrivaled success from their debut movie Barsaat in 1949 till the untimely death of Jaikishan in 1971. The Barsaat album broke all records in sales to help the movie have a successful run at the box office and producer, Raj Kapoor, to build his RK Studios.
Besides winning numerous other awards and accolades, SJ won a record twenty nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, winning nine of them, the highest during their time. There were times when they won more than one nomination for the same year like for Anari and Chori Bahen in 1960, Brahmachari and Diwana in 1969, Mera Naam Joker and Andaz in 1972. The record company, HMV, presented a memento the SJ on record sales of Andaz.
Although Shankar faced plenty of negativity as the single composer in the famous banner, he did manage to win three nominations for the Filmfare Award, for Resham Ki Dori, Sanyasi and Beimaan, winning the last one.
Seen in the picture below are Shankar and Jaikishan’s children at the memento presentation for Andaz.
